West Point Bridge Design Local Contest

This discussion area is for basic structure building concepts. Not intended for advanced concepts.
*Good Example: Balsa can bend with the addition of boiling water.
*Good Example: Triangle is the strongest shape for most applications of bracing.
*Bad Example: Balsa can hold X pounds under these conditions.
*Bad Example: Use this shape for this application.
Basically I want you to think a design through with the basics instead of someone else thinking through your design for you.

West Point Bridge Design Local Contest

Post by Garrett »

To all the bridge builders out there :)

I have started a West Point Bridge Design Contest for anyone interested. This contest is scheduled to end March 31st, and there is a prize of $100 for the winner.

To enter, you have to register a team on the contest website. Be sure to enter the local contest code, GBC50A, on the last page of registration.

Have fun. The bridge design software is a blast to mess around with.

You can check the local scoreboard here:

Bridge Costs

I tried the software for about an hour and got $168,672.00 for the cost of the bridge. How does that compare to others?

I do not officially know the costs of the bridges in the local contest, but I know that second place is around $174,000.

For the national contest my personal best is ~$153,000. That is 18th in the East Central zone.

The costs for the previous national winners aren't going to help that much because each year had a unique bridge design challenge created just for the final round of competitors.
